Elkhart Lake, WI – In what is a first for an American race track, The Gearbox concessions at Road America have been awarded a Michelin Star. The Gearbox has been recognized for decades within the racing community for their varied and distinct menu of brat with mustard, brat with sauerkraut, brat with cheese, brat topped with another brat, and french toast sticks. Joan Piper, head chef and local high school student, can be seen on race weekends volunteering her time at the deep fryer. “The Gearbox is an institution among track gourmands and something none of us take lightly. Anyone can cook curly fries, but it takes real attention to detail to know the difference in cook time of sweet potato and curly fries so they don’t burn. This award is something I knew we were all capable of achieving, and I wish it were something I could share with my grandfather who was a loyal customer of The Gearbox going back to the beginning, but he passed away at 45 from heart disease.”
Awarded only to culinary establishments that set themselves apart from others in their category this is not the first time a concessions stand at America’s National Park of Speed has been recognized. In 2015 the St. John the Baptist stand was added to the Zagat guide for their excellence in preparing frozen pretzels.
